Why Are Nurses Overweight?

Why Are Nurses Overweight?

There is an increasing trend of nurses that are on the path to becoming obese. This has been a issue since nurses and other healthcare professionals are known to provide care and healthy advice to patients about wellness and fitness. Although many nurses are overweight, it is not right to judge them as they can still deliver excellent nursing care.

According to a certain research, about 55% of nurses surveyed are obese, citing lack of sleep, irregular work shifts and schedules and lack of chance to work out regularly as the main causes. For nurses working on long and adverse schedules, the obesity is linked to lack of opportunity for quality sleep and exercise. Shift work, non-standard work schedules and overtime are linked to higher rates of weight problems on nurses. Special attention is therefore needed to prevent this problem and to protect the health at the same time.

Before nurses can embrace solid solutions against continuing cases of obesity, they first need to have a clearer insight about the reasons why nurses are obese. These are discussed below:

  • Poor Diet

Eating breakfast, lunch or dinners in workplaces that do not actually contain the right nutrition are daily occurrence in the lives of many nurses. More often, they end up eating junk foods and processed foods because these are the norms in their workplace. There are also frequent times that they end up eating instant foods and unhealthy snacks during breaks.

According to health experts, individuals regardless of jobs and status in life should eat at least five or more servings of vegetables and fruits daily. They should also strive to eat whole refined grains rather than consume processed ones. Failure to eat healthy foods leads to poor diet and this is one of the reasons of rapid weight gain with nurses.

  • Lack of Ideal Physical Activities

Opposing to popular belief, working for 8 to 12 hours is not really sufficient exercise to comply with the suggested daily guidelines and minimize the number of obese nurses. Health experts suggest 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activities at least five times every week. Boredom and tiredness destroys one’s interest of working out. Physical activities can actually reverse these emotions when individuals get active on a regular basis.

  • Sleep Deprivation

Nurses often experience shift changes. Weight gain in nurses is attributed to night shifts work schedules. When nurses are not fully rested, their bodies therefore need to gain more calories for increased energy. This therefore triggers nurses to eat more adding unnecessary calories to their diet.

  • Stress

High level of stress is a given in the lives of nurses. Chronic stress is proven to have a link with obesity and depression. Due to stress, nurses often end up with emotional eating which the triggers unwanted weight gains.

Obesity in nurses is now becoming a top health concern.
