How to Organize an Exercise Group at Work

One of the toughest things about a regular workout schedule is making it regular. Many things get in the way. Kids activities, exhausting days, church, football, and the list goes on. At the end of the day, it is your responsibility to get up and get going on the workouts, but it’s so much easier if you have a group to workout with.

One trend over the past couple of decades has been exercise at work, over the lunch hour, or with work friends before or after work. Sometimes you can even get in on an office TRX Bandscontest to see who can lose the most weight, inches, body fat, or whatever you want. There are many benefits to working out at work. You spend a third of your life with the people you work with, they’re practically family (whether you like them or not). So this is an opportunity to build bonds or strengthen ones that are already there. Plus, this is generally your largest pool of like-minded individuals who know you well. Why not tap that resource to help motivate you in your workouts?

There is not the right way to get a group going, but here are some ways to start.

  • Talk to HR about creating the biggest loser contest. This is one of the easiest ways to get everyone involved. You create two teams and see who can lose the most in inches or body fat. I wouldn’t recommend weight as weight loss is tougher for some than others and those with more can lose larger amounts quicker than those with less. If you do go with weight, break up the teams into balanced weight. Go with total weight and lose from there. My recommendation is to go with body fat%. It’s the best way to gauge healthy weight loss. But really the choice is yours – you can even go with who can lift the most weight, run the most combined miles. The choices are many.
  • Get a few friends to show up to work early for a run or some yoga (or whatever gets your motor running before dawn). Literally, create a workout group. You may need to go to a gym or better yet use some Beachbody programs and just do them together. A lot of people want to lose weight, get in shape, and improve their health, all they need is a little nudge to get going. Just send out an email inquiring about interest and see what happens.
  • Just start working out at work. People will notice and ask. If you’re the leader type, be a leader. Bike to work. Show up early and workout (if you have showers at work). Invite friends to your after work regimen. If they see you doing it, they’ll follow. It doesn’t take much. But not everyone will be ready for the routine. Just remember that it takes about 30 days of sweat to create that habit in yourself so it will be with your coworkers.

Overall, be patient and be flexible. Everyone’s needs are different, and there is no one way to get a group going. You might even find that your group incorporates different people doing different workouts. Finally, keep track. Engage your friends on Facebook, MyFitnessPal, and similar social spaces. If you need help organizing a group, get ahold of me. I’ll set up a challenge group with whatever you need, and we’ll get people getting healthy. Keep in mind, you’ll have to drink the healthiest meal of the day, Shakeology, in my challenge groups (I’m all about doing everything possible to get and stay fit and healthy).
